APPLEYARD TRIPPIN’ IN DUBAI

Posted on 23 June 2010 by rageshopdude

Mark Appleyard recounts his experience here in the UAE as a “typical north-american” in this interview by Volcom Brand Jeans. The Volcom Dubai Tour was four years ago and so much of the skating during that trip is still remembered today. Apple’s footage from Mamzar Bowl, Abu Dhabi Waves etc. Without a doubt, he certainly left his “mark” out here and we can’t wait to have him visit again sometime. Inshallah. Enjoy the clip! Stay tuned for part 2…

Can you spot Shahriar with the afro holding up the volcom logo at the airport!?

ALL ABOARD! RAGE BOWL TO DEIRA

Posted on 12 October 2009 by rageshopdude

Last weekend we invited you to come skate with us in Deira.. and skate we did! We met up at the rage bowl in dubai mall for a sesh. The bowl was super packed with kids trying to get their tricks in for the best trick contest. But it was clear who was ripping, Myles, Omar and Jan we’re busting something new every time they dropped in. We had a unanimous vote for the best tricks… 3rd place: Myles Evans, Switch Crook 270 revert + killed it overall. 2nd Place: Jan Hoffmann’s blunt kickflip fakie. And in 1st was Omar Alabbar who pulled a fakie 270 cab 5050 stall on the extension box.. Whaaaat!?

myles, switch crook

rippers, jan, omar and myles

We awarded the prodigies their Volcom prizes and after a short street sesh waiting for a bus where we all skated this nice rock gap into a street, we hopped on the sparkly new Dubai Metro, which conveniently took us straight to the Union Square station. (Which pops you right out at Deira Fountain, a dream come true for skaters trying making their weekend pilgrimages to Deira from Jumeirah. The Metro might be pretty busy as of now, but it’s gonna save everyone a whole lotta taxi money which would be better spent on cold drinks and zinker burgers.

mikey is the lucky winner

someone didn't pay for their metro pass!

vroom! posse

union square station

deira fountain!

We ended up skating the fountain for ages before proceeding to ’sparks’. At the bottom of the one of the down-ramps was this gap into the street which proved to be super fun… Too bad we don’t have photos.

myles up to no good as usual

alex, lol

of all the people that actually use the deira fountain, its pretty much us skaters, and these dudes

buttery flatground

Sparks was rad, like any other night really. We were welcomed by a whole bunch more “traditional” skaters who had taken older methods of transport to deira. So much for hyping up the day with a flyer that had a metro-train riding a skateboard. Despite riding the metro being the whole point of fun excitement… the majority of skaters here didn’t seem to give a crap!

As it turned out, we figured out why the majority didn’t join us on the metro. Going back into the Union Square station around 8pm, we were confronted with a snaking line that wrapped around the entire station, it would’ve been hours before we caught a ride back to the rage bowl!

So to our dismay and let down of the whole “ALL ABOARD” mumbo jumbo, we had no other choice but to catch taxi’s back!

All in all, the Dubai Metro wasn’t a total let down.. We at least got to deira pretty quick + cheap without much hassle.. We do hope the future looks bright for the metro, because it means getting places cheaper and quicker, at least in theory. You still run the risk of ‘doing something wrong’ while in the metro, which might leave you with a fine heftier than the cost of a taxi, or your mate’s petrol! Dhia was threatened with a 200-300dh fine just for using his friends pass, as simple as that sounds, its totally not cool with the RTA.

Whatever, get out and skate!

no more film for the rest of the day!

thanks for coming homies!
